Every Texas vehicle is required to be registered with the state and are given a sticker to display. Before receiving your Texas registration sticker, a vehicle inspection must be performed by an official vehicle inspection station, certified by the Texas Department of Public Safety. This inspection includes a thorough safety inspection and, in some Texas counties, an emission inspection. For most vehicles, drivers are required by law to renew their registration annually.

Let Shades of Texas help get you back on the road. We provide quick and efficient vehicle inspections for cars, trucks, SUVs, and motorcycles. If you’re in the Cedar Park / Austin area, come visit us or give us a call. Don’t forget, we also provide car window tinting, 3M paint protection film, and more!

What Does the State Inspection Include?

Vehicles registered with Travis or Williamson County are required to pass a safety inspection and an emission inspection.

The safety inspection checks:

  • Seat Belts
  • Horn
  • Turn Signals
  • Headlights (Low & High Beams)
  • Brake / Tail Lights
  • Brakes & Parking Brake
  • Tires
  • Power Steering
  • Mirrors
  • Windshield & Windshield Wipers
  • Exhaust System
  • Gas Caps

Fully electric vehicles, Diesel-powered vehicles, and motorcycles are not required to go through an emission test. For vehicles that are required to pass an emission inspection, there are two different tests that can be performed. An OBDII test is used for vehicles that are from 1996 and newer. It’s performed by attaching an emission tester to your vehicle’s computer and looks to see if your check engine light turns on and off. A TSI test is used for vehicles that are from 1995 and older. The Two Speed Idle Test attaches a probe to the exhaust pipe and determines how much CO and HC the vehicle emits.

“Two Steps, One Sticker”

Since March 2015, a registration sticker is no longer given after the vehicle inspection. Now, you leave the inspection station with a Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR), proving the vehicle passed it’s inspection. Be sure to hold on to the report; You may have to present it at your local tax office to receive your inspection and registration sticker.
